treasure hunt…

treasure hunt…

a flyer invited all folks in town to a treasure hunt at the old campground…
beginning inside its abandoned lodge the residents got a problem to solve…
“when checking in a storm broke out so escape to the safest place around…
you’ll hear a boom but just stay calm and wait for another clue involved”…

a few stood still as others pursued worn out benches adorning that room…
suddenly a loud speaker blared directing them to the foot of the stairs…
“you’ve been alerted to the breaking news that every step lost all its screws…
there’s a toolbox atop with nails to spare but not a ladder here anywhere”…

each wobbly plank laid unrestored as shoes mopped dust off a gritty floor…
a banner unfolded down every step displaying print for that clue up next…
“sunshine warms a yard to explore so fly this coop and soar outdoors…
climb limp limbs to a treetop nest with a paper inside of it cradling text”…

branches splintering at its bottom defined the wood all eyes got caught on…
words fell etched on a nut’s big shell guiding the hunters to a water well…
“dangerous vermin lurk ’til autumn and will hitch a ride in a bucket drawn…
crank its spindle and forgive the smell to pull up a fish tale to possibly tell”…

all heads failed to hear a clang or notice a hook where that pail might hang…
pine cones flew as winds had blown westward to letters on a steppingstone…
“a gap needs a leap to cross its span so plan on high toes to see if you can…
beware of wide air spaces setting a tone for those who dare to go it alone”…

urges spun bodies into reverse to a desolate cave after changing a turn…
a slit of sun aimed its limited ray at a rocky slab with a message engraved…
“tiptoe so softly upon this dirt where sinkholes fall prey to a trickier curse…
and quicksand reiterates that even courageousness must cuss its embrace”…

legs swiveled away from their forward stride hoping for any trail to find…
a note sprouted lines in a flower pot tipping downhill past a shadier spot…
“below lay veiled poisonous vines to wisely avoid so you don’t collide…
fast getaways may be all you got before longer stems too close tie knots”…

footsteps ran to a wooden bridge leaving an acre between skin and an itch…
handrails lent help to lean and read a memo floating in a creek underneath…
“a dam upstream just broke a switch that’ll push this walkway over a ridge…
flooding’s projected to a higher degree with advisories to immediately flee”…

knees picked up a chaotic pace like the later stretches in a marathon race…
scrambling beyond most prior clues they passed a sign on a vacant route…
“caution to all who use this lane which covers an area of landslide terrain…
slopes lay prone to rocks on the loose so go seek refuge if objects move”…

rustles above sent ears into gears deserting a road where stones interfered…
perils fading as they fled led to eyes gladly spying that first yard ahead…
towards the starting point they veered as that earlier treetop nest appeared…
each sigh deepened when final treads re-entered a lodge before a sun set…

on a picnic table in that rustic hall laid a pile of soil and tiny shovels for all…
adding to folks’ bewilderment on benches sat eye-catching treasure chests…
local gemstones graced small outer walls among chips of minerals overall…
cards attached held outcomes for guests including clues for another quest…

“prejudice may easily kick in by creating a difference for an opinion to win…
our trek dug up a mutuality it found as we all returned still safe and sound…
shovel some of its soil into your bins for these similar roots we find within…
as human bonds can also abound in a treasure hunt on common ground!”…
