feeding a tunnel enough space to escape…

a tunnel’s late dinnertime usually started between midnight and three…
from a fabricated spoon that fed room into a new route to flee…
it’d eaten enough underground yardage to reach past a tall outside wall…
as drippings of saltier sweat crawled along an attempt’s final straw…

it began building up volume numerous moon phases ago…
with less sleep and more weariness for muscles refilling its throat…
delivering space on a spoon while taking away solid waste…
this tunnel could soon breathe on its own as it developed in length…

though for a few meals it’d remained far too fussy with food…
needing a large shank instead to dig into hard rock and resume…
and when it stubbornly refused and closed up for all bites…
a forced feeding shoved more area with a heavyweight’s old pipe…

it finally grew up to be finished and wondered which end seemed worse…
a suffocating moldy jail cell or a sludgier sewer line of slimy turf…
still for all those muffled cusses and low spitting groans over time…
the inmate’s successful escape left it feeling victoriously sublime…

but that tunnel’s happy helping hand soon felt big chain tracks of despair…
after its details hit front pages with photos scattered everywhere…
then officials insisted that any future for it must never materialize again…
as their mammoth-sized machinery bulldozed it back to compacted land…

years later and on a better day since the prison’s former role shut down…
they allowed all paying visitors to tour human nature’s wayward grounds…
’twas then that a rough angular chiseled slab still incarcerated in that cell…
escaped a penitentiary’s oppressive aura in a tunnel-shaped hand to help!…
